Coastlines and Countrysides: A Girls Getaway to Mallorca

Vivian Kim

How two long-distance friends, photographer Vivian Kim and designer Zoe Morton, spent a few spontaneous days on a warm-weather getaway to Mallorca. Words and photos by Vivian Kim

“Entire home. Sleeps four…” Classic Zoe. I would’ve never thought to book just the two of us in an Airbnb that’s meant for an entire family. But that’s the brilliant, bigger-picture thinking that comes with my friend Zoe Morton. Her visionary eye shines through in everything she touches—from her lovely handcrafted, travel-inspired jewelry to booking the perfect accommodation for a spontaneous vacation.

Zoe lives in London and I live in Los Angeles, so most of our communication throughout the year is over WhatsApp, FaceTime and Instagram DMs. I messaged her some weeks before, “We should do a trip together!” With Fall weather rolling in, we decided to go somewhere where we could enjoy the sun for a tiny bit longer. Neither of us cared all that much about the details of where—as long as we were on holiday together.

Soon after spinning the globe, we booked our flights to Mallorca, Spain, and Zoe was picking me up from the airport in the Mediterranean. She pulled up in the ultimate European car: a tiny white and red Fiat with a panoramic sunroof for us to explore the stunning views of the Spanish isle. I walked out of the airport to warm afternoon light, and a breeze that was perfect for layering up. We drove out of Palma, the major city, leaving the congestion and traffic behind.

As we made our way through smaller towns, even the convenience stores seemed to glow and glisten in the golden light. We laughed at our little car struggling to climb smoothly uphill on a windy mountain road, joking about how easily cars could fall off the side of the cliff. Our turnoff road to the Airbnb led us up steeper and narrower streets, until we finally found our spot: the entire home that sleeps four.

We walked down the dirt path leading to our new abode, hands full of bags and groceries, and then… Wow. This was the home of my dreams. I imagined each stone specially chosen, chiseled and stacked to become a part of this European fairytale villa. The porch overlooked the green valleys, rocky cliff sides and a sparkling blue ocean view. We dropped our bags and began admiring every visible detail and quirk of the house. It exactly fit Zoe’s simple, earthy, timeless taste. We looked at each other and laughed in disbelief at how it was even more breathtaking than the photos.

Even the sink and washroom was beautiful.

The ocean breeze was blowing cooler so we found a few logs and dry brush to start a fire outside. It wasn’t our best work, but it kept us warm. We prepared our veggies outside (even the sink was beautiful), and cooked (or maybe more like charred) our dinner over the fire with wine and bread from the region.

The next few days together unfolded without any plans—settling into a rhythm of intentional rest and an open mind. We were both taking a break from the demands of our businesses (for me, photography and for Zoe, running her own jewelry line) by practicing meditation and yoga in the mornings, and just catching up on life.

We talked about how we could be happy doing nothing for some time. All we’d need is a beautiful space like our mountain home, some water to jump into, clean air, and our loved ones. I learned that my soul thrives in a peaceful environment. You can’t communicate over a text message the emotions of seeing and feeling that someone understands you in the same way that you can face-to-face. A lot of human-ness is lost over social media. Being together in-real-life is so special because you get to appreciate just being in your friend’s presence.

We explored the town while drinking lots of coffee, eating lots of bread, and pulling over wherever we wanted to in our little Fiat. Along the way, we came across the most beautiful swimming cove and couldn’t believe we were the only ones there. At that moment, it seemed the sun existed to shine down on this special spot as we jumped into the glistening water.

It often seemed like we were the only tourists high up in the mountains, witnessing the real Mallorca outside of the main city. It felt like we stepped into a completely different time. We saw shop owners in town yelling greetings to each other across the street. We watched families help each other with laundry and lovers enjoy the sunset from their balcony. We felt completely like spectators. We weren’t there to be sold souvenirs. We were there simply to observe a society that’s existed for many, many generations before us.

Four days went by much too quickly and on the morning of our departure, we had one last coffee together at 6 AM. The cafe was the only lit storefront on a usually busy street. There were a few businessmen quickly drinking their espressos before walking out. There was a man at the counter who looked like he had spent his whole night there drinking whiskey… still drinking whiskey.

We ordered our last espressos and pastries and packed up our Fiat to head back to the airport. As we said our goodbyes, Zoe gave me a piece of jewelry to remember our travels and our friendship. And that was my last memory of the trip—not the beautiful drives, refreshing swims, or delicious food—just Zoe and I squeezing in one last coffee and being present together. After all, it’s not as much where you go, but who you’re with, that makes an experience unforgettable.
