Backpacking the world is a right of passage for many post-grads, but when Teva fan Erin strapped on her pack, she decided to forgo baguettes and hostels for something a little, well, darker: caving in Waitomo, New Zealand.
“We repelled down that [cave] mouth from grassy fields above,” she tells us. “You’d never suspect there’s an amazing microcosm down there—it’s like another world!”
And the aliens on said world? Glow worms, which provided just enough lighting for Erin as she floated through the cave on an inner tube with her best friend.
“The photos were taken by our tour guide in the caves,” Erin explains. “She took lots of great pictures and gave us all copies. She works for the Kiwi Cave Rafting Company—you get to repel, climb, cave and raft for $199. Other companies charge you $700 just to repel and go right back up!”
Her backpacking days may be over, but Erin’s already saving up for her next right of passage: hiking the Everest base camp. How’s that for ambition?
