Sometimes the thinner you go, the better it feels. Hey get your head out of the gutter… we're talking about shoes here. The Zilch is the thinnest, most minimalistic sport sandal we've ever made. Minimalist construction means that the Zilch will bend and flex naturally with your foot, giving you an amazing feel and connection to the earth, but also giving you traction and protection that a bare foot doesn't. The Zilch is so flexible that it can actually be completely rolled up, making it the perfect travel shoe for anyone that likes to pack light. With the Zilch, you can use your feet like Mother Nature intended.

Great Product Minus the Stink

By Ben

from TN

Comments about Zilch:

Been wearing for over a year and have been through a LOTTTT. Soles still look new, the footbed has developed a bit of a stink. That plus the rare occasion the strap above my arch rubs me the wrong way are my only problems. My next pair is pretty soon! Come out with more colors though.

By beachgoer

from Honolulu, Hawaii

Pros

  • Fit
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Footbed absorbs H2O
  • Straps need more padding
  • Toe strap tight

Best Uses

  • Hiking
  • Jogging
  • Kayaking
  • Walking

Comments about Zilch:

This still gets 5 stars as it's such a novel conception and design for a Teva. The Zilch caught my eye as it was being advertised as a "minimalist...nearly barefoot" model. I was eager to try this on. Luckily there was one left in my size, and I bought it.

Long story short, after about 2 months of continual use, here's my report on the Teva Zilch:

- Have used to hike Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea Ridge Trails (over 20 miles). They're dirty now, but perfectly fine. No major problems w/feet.
- Have used to hike Koko Head Trail to the summit. No problems w/feet.
- Have used to kayak to/from offshore islets on Oahu. No problems w/feet.
- Have used to hike all the way down Waipio Valley (Big Island, Hawaii). No problems w/feet.
- Hiked a total of 100 miles in over a month on the Big Island. No problems w/feet.

They are versatile enough, since they don't **LOOK** immediately like normal Teva's, to wear to casual events, social gatherings, even out to the club. I have successfully worn them in my office with casual business dresses (i.e. us gals vs. you guys can get away with any type of footwear, practically).

You may also be stopped on the street and asked, "where did you get those? Where did you find that? Where can I find it?"

Caveats:

- in breaking them in, the toe loop *FEELS* a little snug, and it can be slightly uncomfortable as you break them in. Since it's an elastic band nested under a hard strap, there's almost no give if you have a BIG big toe. LOL.
- the middle strap (goes across the middle of the top of the foot) needs more padding; when you take off the Zilch you feel **AAHHH** and there's a sweat line where it was in contact. It's like wearing a plastic band with only small dots of padding glued on there.
- the footbed absorbs water (like it's semi-porous or something), and when they get wet (no, I mean submerged), they slosh around and take a LONG TIME to dry.
- dirt is nearly **IMPOSSIBLE** to clean off the footbed. Everywhere else, it wipes off simply with a wet rag or wet wipes.
- you have to be **CAREFUL** when walking offroad or on trails with these (obviously). They're like walking barefoot, and require exercising due caution and taking a little extra time to gauge your footing, **NOT** stepping on sharp objects, etc.
- when wet, the soles are slippery! i.e. river rocks are hazardous!

Recommendations:

5 stars for design and innovation
5 stars for comfort (after broken in)
5 stars for versatility
4.5 stars for straps (minus .5 point for toe loop elastic & middle straps)
