Last weekend I volunteered with the Treasure Island Sailing Center in San Francisco and got to know their nonprofit educational program, Set Sail Learn. I helped teach a young group from a local school all about the ecology of the bay area and the importance of environmental responsibility. It was so energizing to be with kids who were eager to learn.
In class we learned about adaptation strategies for organisms and how we can make positive or negative impacts on their environments.
Outside the classroom the children have a chance to explore the bay on a sailboat captained by an instructor.
Captain Chris led the kids in a game teaching them the importance of population size and habitat conservation.
At the end of the day, we cleaned up the dock and used a crane to store the boats on land for the night.
